Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Mental health has long been a neglected aspect of public health discourse in many parts of Nigeria, including Lafia Local Government in Nasarawa State. Despite the increasing recognition of mental health as an essential component of well-being, there remains a significant stigma surrounding mental health issues, as well as a lack of awareness and understanding of mental health conditions. Local newspapers have been playing a key role in addressing these challenges by publishing features, articles, and expert opinions that aim to inform the public about mental health, reduce stigma, and promote access to services (Oluwaseun & Adeyemo, 2023). Through regular columns, interviews with mental health professionals, and community-based stories, newspapers in Lafia have provided a platform for public education, highlighting the importance of mental health, the signs of mental illness, and the available resources for support and treatment. This study seeks to examine the impact of these newspaper features in raising awareness about mental health in Lafia, with a particular focus on how the media has contributed to changing attitudes and behaviors toward mental health issues.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Although mental health awareness has increased globally, the stigma associated with mental health issues remains prevalent in many Nigerian communities, including Lafia. Local newspapers in Lafia have taken steps to address this gap by publishing mental health-related features, but the actual impact of these efforts on public awareness and attitudes remains unclear. Mental health issues, often regarded as taboo or shameful, continue to be underreported, and individuals experiencing mental health challenges may avoid seeking help due to societal pressure and lack of awareness (Adebayo & Durojaiye, 2024). This study aims to assess the effectiveness of newspaper features in Lafia in promoting mental health awareness and reducing stigma. It will also explore whether these media interventions have led to a noticeable shift in public attitudes, as well as how accessible mental health services are to the community.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study provides essential insights into how local newspapers can contribute to improving mental health awareness in Lafia Local Government. The findings will help guide mental health advocacy groups, media outlets, and policymakers in their efforts to promote better mental health practices and education. By assessing the impact of newspaper features, the study also contributes to understanding the role of media in changing societal attitudes toward mental health, which is crucial for fostering more inclusive and supportive communities. Furthermore, the research will offer recommendations for enhancing media strategies to combat stigma and encourage better access to mental health resources.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the role of local newspapers in Lafia Local Government, Nasarawa State, in promoting mental health awareness. It examines the content of newspaper features and their impact on public attitudes toward mental health. Limitations include variations in readership access, especially in rural areas, and potential biases in participant responses related to mental health stigma.
